 Great for six months, but now hit or miss September 5, 2010

This drive worked great with my iBook for the first several months and I was very pleased. I mostly just used it to import my music CDs, and I do have a couple hundred. As other reviewers noted, it even imported discs that my internal drive would not read. Now, however, I can hardly import an entire CD without an error. Either the drive will dismount itself while importing, or it will get stuck importing a disc and freeze iTunes up, or it will import a disc but leave off the last few minutes of a track... It's pretty unreliable now. I'm not sure if it's from overuse, or because it draws the power from the USB ports, or just a manufacturing flaw.

I bought this DVD-Writer because it had good reviews and it had been recommended to me by a friend. No real problems with it performance wise, but one great disadvantage: it requires TWO USB ports to operate. It's advertised as compatible with Macintosh computers - and it is - but many Apple computers have two USB ports only (for example my MacBook Pro) and it's not convenient to have both of them be busy while I burn something.
Other than that, it works fine so far and is a good value for the money.

I received it on time. I ordered the black color. I had it up and running in less than 2 minutes. It performed like a champ: Played and burned CD's; played and burned DVD's. (You need to have the software for the CD and DVD operations. It came bundled with a Nero CD burning suite which I did not install as I had all the required software already installed.) I like the compactness - it's approximately the same size as a DVD movie case. When you press the eject button the drawer opens about 3/4 of an inch and you pull it out the rest of the way. To close it you simply push the drawer in. There is no motor to open and close the drawer. It is a masterpiece of the art of miniaturization.

Samsung SE-SO84 external dvd burner; color black. A personal opinion.
Should have ordered my macbook with a superdrive but didn't. So purchased this optical drive as I need to burn a dvd backup now and then. Just pluged it in the mac and started backing up iTunes, iPhoto, and one very short iDvd project just to see if it would work. And it did. Got only one coaster in iPhoto, but have never had a dvd burner that didn't make a coaster now and then. The included software is for Windows only and useless to me. The included usb cable is very good quality. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. Recommend this unit to MAC users only as I am not a PC person.
