Compact, attractive, but questionable DVD rom September 3, 2010 R. Chiang I bought it for what it is so I wasn't expecting something powerful. If you need this to read copied DVDs, you will be disappointed. It read some DVDs but wouldn't read other copies. Since this is not really considered defective, I bought external dvd roms and they read those dvds fine.
ASUS EB1501 August 30, 2010 Wayne Browand (Huntsville, AL) I ordered this computer believing that it contained the 'Express Gate' dual booting feature. Don't believe everything you find on the web as the E-box family does not contain this feature. Also, there is no documentation that comes with this computer. You have to download from the ASUS web site, althought they don't even tell you that. I like the size, quietness, multiple interfaces, and low power consumption. Its functions well as a 'basic' home computer.
ASUS EeeBox EB1501 August 29, 2010 R. S. Harris (Santa Rosa, CA) My planned use of the ASUS EeeBox EB1501 was strickly as a media device. First to handle the Logitech Squeezeserver for my two Squeezebox units and also to stream movies and TV from the internet. For these purposes it has been excellent. When sitting idle, but turned on, it draws 21 watts and is suitably quiet. The processor is adequate for the above uses but not much more; nor is it planned to be.
My one criticism is the Trendmicro Internet Security software which caused me some difficulties with this unit. The data for my Squeezeserver is located on a NAS drive. While the Trendmicro was loading the Squeezeserver would lose contact with the NAS. I would have to manually reconnect the mapped NAS drive and then manually start the Squeezeserver. By removing the Trendmicro and replacing it with AVG Antivirus/Antispyware the problem was solved and I can now easily run my networked media through the device. The problem was caused by the relatively slow processoer and the CPU needs of Trendmicro while it's loading.
I would recommend the EeeBox EB 1501 to anyone for the above purposes. Don't try to use it as a major PC, it would need more horsepower for office processes.

I researched media center computers for a long time. The Asus EB1501 seemed to have everything I wanted at a good price point. It set up flawlessly until it was time to get the audio output. I hooked up the S/pdif adapter to a Toslink optical
cable to optical input on my Harmon Kardon receiver.I set the receiver to recognize the input. No sound not even from the earphone connection on the front panel. Tech support answered my call promptly . They suggested I install drivers No results.
They suggested total
system restore which I would lose all my settings. No way! A brand new unit. Did they not check this when it left the factory? They're best suggestion was to send it to the factory. I do not make purchases so that I can send it to the repair center.
Do not buy Asus products . I should have bought the mac mini as all my mac products have never give problems. You pay for what you get. Update : Most of my problems lie with tech support. They are completely inept. I gave up on the audio
output with the S/pdif adapter which they were no help with and hooked up receiver to TV with analog stereo cables. The sound comes from TV and while this may not be 5.1 it sounds OK. I now think it can be hooked up properly either by Nvidia adjustment or through VLC media center. But for now I am leaving it analog.I also had problems with proper screen resolution and black bars(pillarboxing). No help from Asus tech support. I loaded VLC media player and solved the pillarbox problem with aspect
ratio adjustment. Conclusions: Do not purchase if you will depend on tech support. This is actually a good unit at the price point. If you can't figure it out for yourself, find a company with better support. I have mac mini as my main computer.
Apple has great support. Others with outstanding support: Cisco, Sony, Canon,Harmon-Kardon and Logitech.
Good stuff when you know what your doing July 5, 2010 S. Rester (MI) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After some tweaking and in the installation of flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration for H.264 I finally got this little guy running pretty good. The price could have been a bit cheaper for this with all things considered, or atleast give us 4gigs of memory or a bluray player. Enough with the nitpicking! This system is quiet, small, energy efficient, and among other things FUN. I can watch all my movies, tv shows, YouTube videos, Hulu, or just browse the web from the comfort of my own couch. Apples new mac mini is a better all around media center. HOWEVER, the Mac Mini is like $799 with 4gigs of memory and then you need to get the wireless keyboard and mouse which are both $80. So you'll easily end up paying $1000 for a simple media computer. Surely though you can use the apple for some more complex things as games. I would put windows on it for that exact fact (even though the apple guys might really frown at this haha). Hope this helps!
